ChessScroll ("ChessScroll," "we," "us," or "our") is an iPhone app that places the apps you choose behind a chess puzzle: solve the puzzle, earn minutes of use. This Privacy Policy explains what information the app handles, how it is used, and the choices you have.
Your sealed apps. When you pick the apps ChessScroll should seal, your selection is handled by Apple's Family Controls and Screen Time frameworks. The selection is stored on your device as opaque tokens that identify the apps to the system but are not readable by us. It never leaves your device.
Screen-time and app-usage data. Timing and usage of your sealed apps is processed on-device by Apple's Screen Time framework inside sandboxed system extensions. Apple's architecture prevents this data from being transmitted to us or to anyone else. We receive nothing.
Chess activity. Your puzzle attempts, puzzle rating, streak, earned minutes, and settings are stored locally on your device. The puzzle library ships inside the app, so solving works fully offline. There is no account and no sign-in.
Purchase and membership data. When you subscribe, the transaction is handled by Apple. We use RevenueCat to manage membership status. RevenueCat receives a randomized app user identifier and purchase receipt information so the app knows whether your membership is active. We never see your payment details.
Usage analytics. We use PostHog to understand how the app is used so we can improve it: events such as "a puzzle was solved," "the paywall was viewed," or "onboarding was completed," together with basic device information (model, iOS version, app version) and recordings of how screens in ChessScroll itself are used. This data is tied to a random identifier, not to you — there is no account, so there is nothing to connect it to your identity. It never includes which apps you sealed (those tokens are unreadable to us by Apple's design), anything from the Screen Time frameworks, or anything from outside the ChessScroll app.
Diagnostics. Apple may provide us with aggregated, anonymized crash and usage statistics through App Store Connect if you have enabled sharing in your device settings. This data does not identify you.
ChessScroll relies on three providers to function. Their handling of data is governed by their own privacy policies:
Your puzzle history, rating, and settings are stored on your device. If you delete the app, this local data is removed with it, and any Screen Time restrictions ChessScroll applied are lifted. Membership records held by Apple and RevenueCat are retained according to their policies.
ChessScroll is a self-restriction tool you apply to your own device. It is not directed at children and is not a parental-control product. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.
If we change this policy, we will post the new version at this address and update the date above. Material changes will be noted in the app's release notes.
