ChessScroll

Terms of Service

Last updated: July 22, 2026

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the ChessScroll iPhone app. By downloading or using ChessScroll, you agree to these Terms.

1. The service

ChessScroll uses Apple's Screen Time and Family Controls frameworks to place apps you select behind a chess puzzle. Solving a puzzle unlocks the sealed apps for a period of time you configure. You choose which apps are sealed and the exchange rate between puzzles and minutes, and you can change or remove these restrictions at any time.

2. A self-control tool, not a guarantee

ChessScroll is a commitment device you apply to yourself. It is not a parental-control product, a security product, or a medical or therapeutic device, and it makes no guarantee about screen-time outcomes. Restrictions can be removed by you at any time, including by deleting the app. Do not rely on ChessScroll to block access to apps in safety-critical situations.

3. Membership and billing

ChessScroll requires an auto-renewing membership, offered as an annual plan (with an introductory free trial) and a monthly plan. Current prices are shown in the app before you purchase and may vary by territory.

4. Acceptable use

You agree not to misuse the app, attempt to circumvent its licensing, reverse engineer it except where the law permits, or use it in violation of applicable law.

5. Intellectual property and attributions

ChessScroll, its design, and its content are owned by the ChessScroll operator. The app includes third-party materials used under their own licenses: the chess piece images by Colin M.L. Burnett ("cburnett"), used under CC BY-SA 3.0, and puzzle positions derived from the Lichess puzzle database, released under CC0. Attributions are also listed inside the app.

6. Disclaimer of warranties

ChessScroll is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose. App-sealing depends on Apple's Screen Time framework, whose behavior is controlled by Apple and may change with iOS updates.

7. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the ChessScroll operator shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data or profits, arising from your use of the app. Our total liability shall not exceed the amount you paid for the service in the twelve months preceding the claim.

8. Changes to the app and Terms

We may modify the app or these Terms. If we make material changes, we will post the updated Terms at this address and update the date above. Continued use of the app after changes take effect constitutes acceptance.

9. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws applicable in the jurisdiction in which the ChessScroll operator is established, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles, except where mandatory consumer-protection laws of your country of residence apply.
